I have a big sweet tooth. When I want a sugar fix I need something that will give me the sweet satisfaction of conventional candy. None of this ‘one dried apricot’ bullshit. So when I was sent a box of superfood truffles from Functional Foods Co. I was excited to give them a try. Coffee made, I set about sampling these gorgeous treats which were almost too pretty to eat….almost.
Alessandra created functional Foods Co. out of necessity to aid her epileptic, autistic and coeliac son get the nutrients he needs. She explains “Having had previous experience with functional foods, I researched the world’s most nutritionally compact plant based ingredients to lock into chocolate truffles for him to consider.” A logical way, it seems, to encourage kids to eat beneficial foods under the guise of a treat.
“The first truffle that started the Nono family was Macro Marz – macronutrients marzipan. Made of the 4 greens that you can assume a child would not consider: spirulina, pumpkin seeds, pea protein and hemp seeds. With no added sugar, this was a good source of minerals for him.”
More nutritional flavours followed including Raspberry & Beetroot with the added benefits of vitamins C,E and antioxidants, Apple and Cinnamon with calcium and Baobab and Protein with probiotic to name a few.
These chocolates however are not just for kids. I would liken the taste of my favourite flavour (Rose with Di-mannose) to a smooth rose infused white chocolate with a slight crunch.
I love how these truffles look! The colours are vibrant and the assorted box is decorated with bright petals. Not only do they hit the spot with satisfying sweet cravings, these truffles won’t give you a sugar rush. The boxed chocs would be a perfect gift for a health conscious friend. And on this note I learn that we can look forward to an autumnal gift box “Packed with healthy spices. Ideal for Christmas and cold winter months. Lots of dark chocolate for the ‘cravings of the mind’.” Which sounds truly delicious.
